it was a dark and stormy night. that's how all scary stories start.
except.. in the young cat's case, this was real and not made up.

he was trying to get away from the winter's veil wrapping around
his eight moon old fur, which wasn't nearly long enough to protect
him from the cold nipping at his nose.

suddenly, the crowd of stars sprinkled in the sky shone on a figure
not close to the tom but not far away either. the cat had hope.

he just had to get to the silhouette.

kaos trailed through the burning cold snow. he wasn't sure he'd ever felt so overcooked
from something as cold as ice - how was that possible?

but now it wasn't time to ponder on useless thoughts. how was he going to survive if
he couldn't get to the silhouette in time? he would die out here, die in the pale snow,
all alone. kaos tried to think.

finally, kaos got an idea. he was thirsty, so.. couldn't he just eat some snow? he did,
and it helped him get more energy. the only con to his idea was that.. now his throat
was freezing. kaos mewed in exhaustion, and swallowed a couple of times until his
throat felt alright again.

he was getting closer to the figure - at least, closer than he was before. he didn't trust
his vocal cords enough to call to the strange cat hidden by the veil of snow, so he'd
have to trust his young and stubby feet instead.

he pushed through the snow, eyes shut, and kept walking forward.

the spark of hope that had come to kaos when he first spotted the stranger was
slowly fading - the figure had begun to walk back to wherever they came from.

nearly hopeless but determined to reach his goal, kaos started running as fast as
his little legs could carry him. he almost fell to the ground, but tripped instead,
grunting as he did so.

he'd unknowingly run longer than he'd anticipated - he was less than a kilometre
away from the silhouette, but the snow was so thick that kaos couldn't make out
the stranger's features - they were still only a gray figure in the horizon.

kaos closed his eyes again and kept sprinting, until he suddenly fell onto someone
or something that was suprisingly soft.

"hey, watch where you're- oh, gods.." he heard someone say.

then he fainted.

when he woke up, his fur was warm, but not from the burning cold - from a
fire burning in the middle of the cave he was laying in. a cat sat beside him,
their rabbit companion resting on the blue rosette's back.

"who.. who are you?" kaos asked. then he realized - it must be the mystery
cat in the snow. the cat looked at him and smiled. "i'm otterglow, and i think
i should be the one asking you that question." the cat spoke in a melodic
voice, that almost sent him back to sleep.

"i'm kaos. i was out looking for food and.. then the snowstorm hit." he looked
away. he couldn't bare to remember the cold. he'd almost died. "if it weren't
for you.. well, i could say goodbye to food forever."

otterglow smiled. "well, you must be an orphan if you were out all alone. you
don't seem older than, what, eight moons? anyways, i understand if you don't
want to talk about that." as she spoke, he nodded. "so, i guess i should tell
you a story. that's what you youngsters like."

kaos didn't object, so the she-cat continued. "once upon a time, the world did
not exist. until a schism opened in the middle of the darkness, and the planet
we're sitting on flew out of it. on it, there were four kits - the gods."

"there was mako - the oldest deity, the god of darkness and the universe. then
there was his minutes younger twin sister, atlantis, who was the goddess of
time and water. after them came the newborn kits, kiran (the god of light and
wealth) and anemone (goddess of air and freedom)."

otteglow kept speaking, explaining each of the adventures the deities had gone
on to create all the creatures of the world. when she finished, she told kaos
about how two more gods, amara (goddess of nature and growth) and jotun,
deity of fire and power, had been born in secret and only discovered by the
other deities at the age of thirteen moons.

otterglow even explained the mako had disappeared after letting another cat,
lykos (who's name changed to erebus) take over his role as god of the universe
and darkness.

kaos looked at otterglow in utter awe. otterglow then told him it was time to go
to sleep, so he fell asleep to the beat of otterglow's companion, spots, heart.

kaos dreamed of crystals. crystals of every colour and shape, each kind in large
quantities. he dreamed that he had his family, and that they lived in that cave
of jewels together, with no one to bother them.

his father looked down at kaos with adoration in his eyes. "i'm proud of you, my
little storm cloud." he smiled. kaos' mother nodded. "we will always be in your
huge heart, my love." she said, holding her son close.

otterglow came out from behind a mound of crystals and joined their group hug,
making kaos feel safer than ever. she was like a mother to him now, in a way.
she helped him when he was feeling sick of life.

his mother nodded to him, as if she'd somehow sensed his thoughts. then, kaos
thought of how he'd lost his family.

kaos was five moons old, and they were in a forest, eating together in peace.
suddenly, a large wolf came towards them and his father noticed just in time to
slash the wolf's face as it tried to pick up kaos' mother. but.. in the end, they
didn't make it out and kaos was the only survivor.

but he decided to forget the thought as he stayed in his family's embrace.

kaos woke with a start, rays of light shining on him. he opened his eyes and
saw cats crowded around him. he was in the middle of something that looked
like the clan camp otterglow had told him about yesterday.

otterglow was one of the cats. she pushed through the others, and moved
toward him. "hey, kaos - this is the clan i told you about." she smiled warmly,
and a few of the cats greeted him. "silverstar told me you could stay!" she
pointed toward a kind looking calico, who nodded happily.

kaos couldn't believe he was finding a family again. he got up and dug his
nose into otterglow's thick fur, tears streaming down his face. "thank you."

but not all of the cats had otterglow's sparkling personality; some welcomed
kaos with open arms, while some sat in the corner, watching the young cat
angrily. kaos heard whispers of he shouldn't be alive. around the clan,
but, deciding to ignore them, he was happy to have at least a few people
that cared for him.

kaos awoke in the night, on his third moon in the clan. even after all this time, he was
not sure at all if he was accepted by everyone there. lots of cats avoided him, like he
was a deathly sickness that you could get just by glancing at kaos.

sometimes, he felt like he was a sickness. like he shouldn't be there. he didn't belong.
so he sat there, under a blanket of stars, thinking about this. he'd considered running
away so many times. but what about otterglow? she had friends there, but he was
part of her life now. she'd became his adoptive mother just a moon ago. he couldn't
leave her; could he?

the apprentice shook his head, his indigo eyes shining in the moonlight. he sighed.
maybe at some point he would have to leave peaceclan? leave otterglow? better
to rip the bandaid off than to let it hurt longer. his thoughts confused him, he did
not know what to do; not now.

at last, his mind wandered to another place, a place of sweet dreams where he
eluded his confusing thoughts - sleep.

in the morning, otterglow came to greet kaos. "you ready for morning training?" she
asked, grinning. kaos couldn't help but smile back. "you know me!" he nodded, last
night's thoughts out of his head.

otterglow trained kaos in what would be his final lessons before he turned 12 moons,
and became a full warrior of peaceclan. she taught him everything he had to know
during the three moons he'd been there, and now the two were going over what kaos
had learned during his training.

when the training finished, kaos tripped on his way to the apprentice den. he had
to be sent to saltwater at the medicine cat den - she was very kind and put cobwebs
over his wound, which was on his left front paw.

it was just kaos and his thoughts again. he then decided he was going to run away
before silverstar could declare him a full warrior of peaceclan. before he was theirs
forever. but what if the others respect me once i'm a warrior? his mind voice asked.
kaos shook his head. there was no way.

the next day, kaos' wound was already much better and saltwater told him to do some
exercise to help his paw get stronger. he did, and about an hour later he was good to go.

kaos had planned out his escape plan; he'd ask to go on a lone patrol, then he'd ditch
the clan. otterglow wouldn't notice until the next day, as she had to help silverstar with
some clan work. it'd be a swift escape, nobody would know.

he padded throughout the clan, greeting whoever would meet his eye. he found the
clan's deputy, ghostfeather, and told her he wanted to go on a lone patrol to see how
much prey he could collect for the clan.

she nodded and told him to be back by sundown. kaos thanked ghostfeather and left
camp grounds. he wasn't going to find any prey; he was leaving.

but still, his mother otterglow was on his mind. what would she do when she found
out? he then felt the urge to go back to peaceclan - but it disappeared just as quick
as it had come.
