Guide To *Nice* Trade Rules

Postby Memories » Wed Mar 24, 2010 4:40 am

This guide has been moved to the wiki! You can now read it here. Thank you all for the support and suggestions in building this guide!

These days, I find myself exiting more and more trades before sending them after reading someone's trade rules.
It seems like everyone here thinks rules have to be mean. They don't! In fact, you're going to get a lot more trades with a set of nice ones than you are with mean ones. The same goes for auction rules.
Below I shall set you an example of mean trade rules and below them put examples of ways to phrase them nicely rather than chasing people away.

---

Trade Rule Example One: DO NOT SEND ME BLANK TRADES! THEY WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY CANCELLED!

First of all, never ever put a rule entirely in caps. That's not going to make people like you very much. And what if that person wants to send you a blank trade because they have no idea what you want? Maybe they don't have any pets on your wishlist! And, in some cases, I have even see people put that rule when they have no wishlist. Didn't know what to trade them, so I again exited the trade without sending it and they lost a potential customer. Below is a compromise to this rule.

Trade Rule Example One Fixed: Sorry, but I don't really have time to search through your pets for editing trades, so rather than just sending me a blank trade maybe you could just PM me asking what I might want for the pet?

---

Trade Rule Example Two: If you offer any commons on this auction, you will be banned from the auction!!!!!!!!!

Cut down on the exclamation points! Never over-use exclamation points in rules. More likely to chase people away. And you shouldn't ban people for what they offer. It just cuts down on how many offers you get. Here's a way to kindly ask them not to offer commons.

Trade Rule Example Two Fixed: Please don't offer commons if you can help it - it won't really add to your offer any. Thank you!

Sounds nicer, doesn't it?
Optional: You can add something in there *nicely* saying that you will not add offers to the auction list if they contain too many commons. Just make sure you keep it gentle.

---

Trade Rule Example Three: If you withdraw your bid from this auction, you will be blacklisted.

Okay, what? It's their bid... And some people need to be able to withdraw. If you want their bid so badly, then you should have accepted it while they were still offering it.

No Replacement Rule For This One

---

Trade Rule Example Four: Anyone who sends me a trade offer of pets that aren't on my wishlist will be put on foe!!

....I am truly unable to comment on how wrong the above rule is. Do you realize how much you are limiting yourself with the above rule? You are depriving yourself of a lot of good deals and trades by that rule. And you are also chasing away trading partners. My advice: Don't include this rule in the first place. Now, if, for some reason, your wishlist includes all the pets you don't own yet and you really would prefer they just stick to your wishlist, you can put something like this:

Trade Rule Example Four Fixed: Hey, it would be appreciated if you would try to stick to my wishlist when sending trades. I will look at trades that do not have my wishlist pets on them, but I really am more likely to consider pets that are on my wishlist.

---

Trade Rule Example Five: Anyone who sends a trade for an auction pet WILL BE BLACKLISTED!

So many mistakes in the above. First of all, leave off the caps please. If you want to emphasize something, use italics or bold. And you shouldn't be blacklisting them for something such as them sending you a trade offer. What if they didn't know you were auctioning the pet? Maybe they'd never even seen the auction thread but saw the pet in a trade group or something? Or maybe they want their bid to be anonymous so they sent it through a trade? Anyways, it really isn't cause to blacklist them. If they send you a trade offer, just cancel and give them a link to the auction in the message and kindly ask them to post their offer there.

Trade Rule Example Five Fixed: Please post your auction offers here rather than send trades.

---
Trade Rule Example Six: Don't be rude if you want your trade accepted

The reason I say not to have this rule in there is because you are stating the obvious. All people know that they shouldn't be rude if they want their trade accepted, and having a rule there will not stop them from their rudeness.

...I've even seen people state the "no rudeness" rule in a very rude way that makes it quite obvious they don't follow their own rules...

As I said. It is better to avoid this rule rather than state the obvious. Also avoid other obvious rules that makes it sound like you think they're an idiot. Treating them like an idiot does not give a good impression.

No Replacement Rule For This One

---

Trade Rule Example Seven: You will be foe'd if you offer on my favorites!!

Okay, what? If you don't want them offering on your favorites, then lock your favorites group. If your favorites group is unlocked people will offer on it regardless of whether you have a rule saying not to. So just lock the group, and don't add a rule about it.

No Replacement Rule For This One

General Trade Rule Tips Repeated From Above

NEVER PUT ANYTHING IN ALL CAPS LIKE THIS! DOESN'T THIS SOUND MEAN AND ANNOYING?
To emphasize something, put it in bold or italics. And make sure it's emphasized in a nice way.
Don't threaten to foe or blacklist people in your rules. That is definitely going to chase people away.
Don't yell at people or be rude to them or foe them if they don't obey your rules. Maybe it was an accident. And even if it was on purpose, yelling at them sure won't help any.
Never use negative words inside rules. It shall not do any good. ( Seriously though, try to avoid using tons of negative words inside rules.)
Use a lot of "Please" and "Thank You". Yes, I now sound like a lecturing parent saying that but it really does help.
The shorter the sentences and shorter the rules, the better.
Rather than calling them rules, try calling them "Guidelines".
Smiley faces are always helpful, as are promises to give them free invisible chocolate chip cookies if they obey your rules ^^
Don't treat your rule-readers like they are stupid - even if they are newbies and unfamiliar to the game, they will still not appreciate being treated like a three-year-old. Avoid words like "Obviously" and "Duh".
Don't add overly obvious rules to your rule-list.
Keep it short. Avoid big fonts and long lists. They're more likely to read the rules if they look short. The less rules you have, the more likely they will be read and remembered.

You are going to kill me for saying this, but I'm saying it anyway: If possible, don't *have* any rules.
Why? Because everyone does. And just about everyone out there with a rules list.... state the exact same thing you'd state in your rules anyway. Seriously. Go out there and start reading all the different rule lists. Chances are, you don't even need to read the rules list to guess whats on it. Because everyone says the same thing.
So when you're putting together your rules list, try this: Only put on any rules that are specific to you only.
Everyone has a rule about not being rude and not begging and not offering on your fave groups. The people trading with you will have read those rules a thousand times. And if they decide to be rude or to beg or to offer on your faves even when you don't want them to, they're going to do it anyway. It won't stop them. So what's the point? The good people will already know all the typical rules and follow them. The bad people will already know all the typical rules and not follow them anyway. You restating all the typical rules isn't going to change that.
So just stick to the important rules that are specific to you rather than waste time restating everything.
Remember, the shorter the rules, the more likely they are to be read.

---

Key Tip To Remember: Rules do not need to be mean! Try your hardest to make them sound nice and you'll get tons more trades ^^

---

Last but never least

Say Thank You! At the end of your rules list, always include a thank you message. It gives a lot nicer feel to the entire rules list and makes people actually want to trade with you! If you can, also include something funny in the list. Like make the last rule "Evil Flying Porcupines are not allowed in the trade section! " Or something random like that ^^

Well I think this is a wonderful guide :D
Exclamation marks are yucky, and CAPS DRIVE ME CRAZY. So thank you.

But for the last bit did you mean to put "(Don't) Use a lot of font colors in your rules list"? Personally I find rainbow coloured trade rules obnoxious.

Sorry if I've worried anyone. I'm not dead, just too busy to do my usual leisure activities online. Real life always catches up with you lol.

Hmmm. True, rainbow colors are annoying. I was thinking using colors (not necessarily rainbow) in place of the caps and such people usually use to attract attention to their rules. Of course, bright colors can make it hard to read the text...

nice guide =)
I just think you shouldn't write long rules. There are so many people who don't bother to read long sentences. Sad but true...

Thanks for making this!
And yes, I do think long sentences/trade rules make people not bother.

This's a great guide. My rules are below; any feedback on them? I don't want to scare people off, but I tend to get a lot of trades that break them, too (especially the last one, which's why I added the bold+red part).

Rules:

1. Stop asking for rares in exchange for commons just because the commons are on my wishlist! Seriously, I cannot emphasize this enough.

2. I generally prefer to trade my rares for other rares, so if you want to offer me commons or uncommons instead, be prepared to offer a lot.

3. It's okay to send blank trades, but only if you specify which group(s) I can look in. Otherwise, I'll probably cancel the trade, because I don't want to spend the time looking through your pets only to be told "That one's NFT".

4. Never ask for my pets for free. I worked hard to get them, and if I do decide to give them away, it's to people I choose, not to those who ask.

5. I'm only interested in the Tess horses, butterfly wolves, and 2nd gen dogs on my wishlist if they're from the same month and year they were originally released in. I cancel trades that ignore this rule.

Thank you! I don't know how many people this will reach, but I've been going to the trade board, seeing someone that says "All trades are open!" "Please trade with me" etc only to find that their rules are really scary and mean.

"I auto cancel and foe you if you leave the trade blank, don't offer me a pet I need AND include some stupid phraseword here that I've changed four times over the reading so now you're confused."

Syntyche, your rules follow along with mine, so I don't see anything 'mean' in them, just stern. That's my opinion though ;)

I'd recommend changing the bold red text to "Sorry, but I will cancel trades that ignore this rule"
And maybe on the first rule change it to: 'Please do not ask for' Rather then 'Stop asking for' to make it sound less harsh.

Well, I guess we can get feedback on our rules here, I guess?
I just re-did my rules, will it scare people off?

1} Please send fair trades!

2} I do not trade items and pets! Sorry, but I don't like the idea of trading things you've paid yourself.

3} I will most likely cancel trades with no message!

4} Please don't use chatspeak.

5} No begging, please!

6} I will not look through your pets! I'm sorry, but I honestly don't like it when people just say 'edit' with nothing on their side.
