Rat Rarity Guide

This guide lists the rarity of the most valuable rats on the site. It also provides non-rat comparison pets to help for understanding trades. Rats typically trade for less than dogs and other species, but you should always consider their rarity. All pets in each tier (or sub-tier) are the same rarity. The top tier is the highest value rat in terms of rarity.

Rat Rarity Guide

This guide lists the rarity of the most valuable rats on the site. It also provides non-rat comparison pets to help for understanding trades. Rats typically trade for less than dogs and other species, but you should always consider their rarity. All pets in each tier (or sub-tier) are the same rarity. The top tier is the highest value rat in terms of rarity.

Tier 0: UR Rat

This rat has been OMGSR since 2011 and never returned to VR.
It is worth significantly more than any other rat.

Tier 1: High OMGSR Rats

These rats fluctuated between VR and OMGSR from 2011 - 2014.
The 2019 Rarity Update firmly set them as OMGSRs and they are unlikely to drop rarity.

These rats were mostly VR until the 2019 Rarity Update.

Tier 3: OMGSR/VR Rats

These rats were mostly VR until the 2019 Rarity Update.
They have been fluctuating between OMGSR and VR since then.

Tier 4: Eternal VR Rats

These rat has always been VR, ever since rarity tags were introduced.
That makes it very difficult to determine their rarity.
It is unclear why they are more common or rare than their littermates.

Happy to take suggestions on improving the guide layout, wording, naming of different sections etc.

I think rats are cute pets and deserve a guide of their own. They weren't properly represented on the old Rares List until they started turning OMGSR. Trading high value rats may be hard for some players, and I think it is important that people know that UR Rat was OMGSR for far longer than the other OMGSR rats.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that the Advent 2009 pre-July rats are proooobably supposed to all be the same rarity (I don't think we have a post to back this up but there's not really any reason why the pre-July pets would've had differing %s), so maybe we can lump their tiers together? or maybe we should leave that out and just go by what the actual adoption/active pets numbers are since those are the numbers we have to work with idk

I think this is tricky because even if they were released with the same theoretical probabilities of being adopted, it is very unlikely that the actual amount of pets adopted would match this. For example, all pets in the staff litter have the same probability of being adopted, but we've seen some outcomes turn common/uncommon before others; just because they have the same probability of being adopted does not mean that the same number will actually be adopted. There could be a 1% chance of adopting X pet, but adopting 100 newborns would not guarantee that you get 1 copy of X pet; you might get many more or none at all. You just have a 1% chance of adopting X pet every time you click adopt. Aren't statistics fun? I'm so glad I'm a biologist. So in this situation, it would be better to go with the rarity changes because even if all of the rats had the same probability of being adopted, a rat that turned VR before its littermate is less abundant in reality.

That's actually what happened with the Sorbet dogs, Tess said they were set to be the same rarity in the forums back in 08 I think, but some went OMGSR before others so in terms of actual adoption, possibly a hoarder or two being active/inactive, which meant that in reality they were slightly different.

For the rats, the difference between Nov/Dec 2010 and Jan 2011 rarity date change is negligible to the point I'd swap them without adding anything, but if you keep doing that then suddenly you have rats half a year apart on the same tier. At the top the tiers are distinct but towards the bottom their gaps are tiny. I kind of chose arbitrary cutoff dates (Jan/July) for them. Happy to revisit a new grouping scheme in the future though c:

We could merge tier 6 into tier 5, or perhaps move tier 5.3 down into tier 6? I didn't want to move the Blue Panda too far from its littermates though. It's not easy when there's no distinct cutoff.

As for Blue Ice Rat... nobody knows what it's doing?? I'm pretty sure you could individually adopt a blue ice and a lime ice rat so there's no site reason for them to be so very different. I'm wondering if people thought blue ice rat was prettier and thus adopted duplicates of them? Or there's a hoarder out there with a huge collection of them somewhere?

just wanted to hop in here to say what an awesome idea this guide is! The species is so terribly underrated due to trading demand to the point where you almost cant even give them away, so maybe this will help folks get a better idea of the real value of these little guys! ^^

I'm glad rats are finally getting a guide :"D As a rat collector I generally just buy them with C$ for cheap, since pretty much every rat needed moving on the old list. It'll be nice to have a concrete pet guide for reference in the future :^)
