CHAPTER ONE
PART THREE
"I like that name," said Dip, licking a paw and blinking peach eyes.
"Thank you," I said. Thorn smiled at me sweetly, though her eyes were misty and I could tell she was thinking, as I was, of better times. Just as I shifted, feeling slightly uncomfortable, there was a harsh rap against the door. It knocked once, twice, and then again. Queen swept into the room again, her dark eyebrows descending to a harsh point on the bridge of her nose.
She opened the door, and I peered around the corner to see who it was. A short, sqaut man with a round, pouchy sort of face stood at the doorway, panting. He wore the fine clothes of the wealthy; a gold trimmed, brilliantly scarlet jacket and dark pants, his bald little head topped with an ugly sort of shapeless hat. "Queen," he said, clearly out of breath. Dip raised her eyebrows at me. "The Pound--just though I'd let you know--it's about to open--but of course..."
His eyes had fallen on me, and they narrowed past their already abnormal smallness. "Aha...a Black Advent...I had heard rumors, I will not deny it but...you know..." he lowered his voice in a rather pitiful attempt at drama, speaking very fast. "I do happen to have--ah--a toxic, oh yes!, and a red one at that! Certainly you cannot turn down an offer so high as--"
"Enough," she said cooly. "She's not for trade, Bale, but thank you for the warning."
He looked thrown off, and put out. They usually did. "The warning? Oh yes, the Pound, well good luck, the streets are already thronged with people, oh dear, I haven't seen it this bad in ages. Rumor has it that there is a
Sunjewel this time, now wouldn't that be a lucky find, eh?"
His beady eyes lingered upon me, and I let out a low growl almost unconsciously.
"Well I suppose I'll be off then," Queen said briskly, and she pulled on her cloak, again almost hidden behind wrinkles of cloth. She forcibly pushed Bale out of the way just as a rush of noise seemed to flow through the streets. Screams and yells echoed through every corner of the house; barks of dogs and whinnies of horses also able to be heard.
The Pound was open. I laid my head down on the rug and sighed. It was ridiculous, really, the obsession contained within each person that lived here, and the Pound opening was like a dam bursting. Us pets however, didn't view it as something to be excited for. Get caught outside, get caught trying to get away? That's where you were taken, and waited months and months to finally get out. Those of us who had been there don't think about our stay with fondness. I try not to.
I had decided to sit and wait it out, when the cat appeared.
