Name - La inquilina (The tenant)
Notes -
(Current length - 1 min 30 sec)
What is the plot - A landlord gives a sale pitch to a possible tenant, unaware that it’s actually the ghost of the old tenant. As they tour the apartment the landlord explains the story of an opera singer that used to live in the apartment. As she does she continues to get calls on her cellphone, frequently interrupting the silence with a jarring ringtone. The short film nears it’s end and the possible tenant is revealed to be the ghost of the opera singer that used to inhabit the apartment.
What did I like - The opera music in the background served as a sort of foreshadowing and added to the atmosphere of the film. I also liked the (juxtaposition) of the opera singer and landlord. One remaining completely silent as the other is incredibly talkative.
What did I dislike - Many of the open shots of the house just felt like a time filler to me and didn't seem to add much to the film. The twist was apparent very early on and the eventual reveal didn't help, it fell flat and really just felt like a let-down after the build up of the first few minutes.
Review (-/10) - 6/10, it was a cool short movie but it felt like it lacked much of the atmosphere it was trying to achieve and the “twist” wasn’t quite as shocking as it could have been.
Would I recommend this? I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it to people, but it’s a good short film that others might enjoy. If it became relevant to the topic I’d totally bring it up as a recommendation.
